Hi Peter, Here is NPD shallow core 8034/5-U-1, the stratigraphically youngest core of the project. Our preliminary palynology interpretation based on five samples: What was interpreted on the sedimentology log as Pleistocene till turns out to be an Early Cretaceous (?early Aptian – late Barremian) debris flow with clasts of many lithologies, sedimentary and crystalline basement. Among others, it contains what appears to be black shales of the Late Jurassic Hekkingen Fm. This is almost identical to a debris flow we found in our shallow cores in 1995 in the in the Valanginian-Hauterivian of the eastern Barents Sea. Interestingly, this 20 m thick block of debris flow has been glasio-tectonically emplaced over several metres of Early Eocene (Ypresian) greenish-grey siltstone. I have only one sample from this. The TD sample is barren, but the limestones appear to have fulusinids, which we haven’t examined. We will give you access to palynology slides from our five sample depths, and you can fill in the gaps with more samples while you are here next week. Regards, Robert
